A história do Coal Chamber começa em 1994, em Los Angeles.Dez Fafara, Rayna Foss, Miguel Rascón e Mikey Cox se unem para formar a banda. Divulgando seu trabalho através de demos produzidos por eles mesmos. Os demos chamaram a atenção do guitarrista do Fear Factory, Dino Cazares e o produtor Ross Robinson, até que firmaram contrato com a gravadora Roadrunner Records em 1995, gravando seu primeiro álbum Coal Chamber lançado em Fevereiro de 1997. O álbum foi sucesso de crítica, especialmente pelo videoclipe loco.Com o lançamento do CD a banda entrou na sua primeira turnê européia, no Ozzfest e abriu shows do Type O Negative.
Após as turnês, a banda começa a trabalhar na gravação do seu próximo álbum, intitulado Chamber Music, lançado em 1999, seu primeiro single foi um cover de Peter Gabriel, "Shock The Monkey" com a participação especial do Ozzy Osbourne. O vídeo dessa música também foi produzido, mais uma vez com a direção de Nathan "Karma" Cox.
Na tour que se seguiu, em uma apresentação no Texas, um desentendimento entre Dez e Meegs culminou em agressão física. Apesar de, o fim da banda ter sido anunciado, um terceiro disco sairia em 2002, "Dark Days" com uma música na trilha sonora do filme Resident Evil. Rayna Foss-Rose saiu da banda alegando que precisava dedicar mais tempo para sua filha que teve com o baterista do Sevendust, Morgan Rose.
Em seu lugar foi colocada a baixista Nadja Peulen, que já havia substituído Rayna quando ela estava grávida. A música "Devils Never Cry " foi escolhida para ser tema do Devil May Cry 3 , jogo lançado pela capcom em 2004/2005.
Em 2003 o fim da banda é fato. Dez a partir de 2003 ingressou na banda DevilDriver.

The Coal Chamber begins in 1994 in Los Angeles.Dez Fafara, Rayna Foss Mikey and Miguel Rascón Cox join forces to form the band. Disseminating their work through demos produced by themselves. The demos caught the attention of the Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares and producer Ross Robinson, who signed to record deal with Roadrunner Records in 1995, recording his first album Coal Chamber launched in February 1997. The album was critically acclaimed, especially by the music video loco.Com release the CD the band entered its first European tour, Ozzfest and opened concerts Type O Negative.
After the tours, the band starts working on recording their next album, Chamber Music, released in 1999, his first single was a cover of Peter Gabriel "Shock The Monkey" with the special participation of Ozzy Osbourne. In the tour that followed, in a presentation in Texas, a misunderstanding between Ten and Meegs culminated in physical aggression.
